Small-scale sustainable agriculture is a crucial component of a healthy community. At Sunfield Farm, our sustainable farming practices, which include biodynamic farming techniques, ensure that we serve as stewards of the land and our natural resources, protect the health of the environment, and provide the highest quality and most nutritious food to the local area.
Sunfield uses biodynamic farming techniques to foster diversity, create balance, and build the fertility of the soil. Biodynamic agriculture is a method of farming that aims to treat the farm as a self-nourishing living organism. Developed by the founder of Waldorf education, Rudolf Steiner, biodynamic principles include raising a diversity of animals and organically grown crops and renewing the soil with materials produced on the farm. To maintain and improve the fields, our farmers use compost, cover crops, and crop rotation. Rotational grazing is used to keep the animals and pastures both healthy and productive.
Food for the Local Community
Our farm provides sustainably grown organic food to the local community through produce sales at the Port Townsend Farmers’ Market and the Port Townsend Food Co-op and through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program for individual community members.
Our biodynamic farm will develop into a system that sustains eight acres of vegetables, orchards, and berries, plus additional acreage to grow feed for the animals; it will be equipped with irrigation, tractors, and new and refurbished barns. Food provided to the local food bank and seniors will multiply over the years.
