Our Five Interconnected Realms

“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.”

— Chief Seattle, Native American leader of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes

Sunfield has a broad mission. To fulfill it, we operate and interact within five interconnected realms: education, land conservation, sustainable agriculture, community service, and rural economic development.

Education

Sunfield Waldorf School

The Waldorf movement is one of the fastest growing independent school movements in the world. Currently there are approximately 870 Waldorf schools worldwide, and we are excited to be part of this important movement towards more holistic education for our children.

For the 2011–2012 school year, Sunfield Waldorf School offers classes for pre-K through grade eight, reaching our goal of classes spanning the elementary years.

At Sunfield, the practical experiences of gardening, sustainable farming, and animal husbandry are integrated daily into both our kindergarten and grade-school Waldorf programs.

Community Education

The fields, forest, and wetlands of Sunfield’s eighty-one acres serve as an invaluable community resource for Jefferson County and the surrounding area. Our community education programs offer opportunities for children, teens, and adults to come to the farm for experiences ranging from creative play in nature to education in land stewardship.

We offer the following programs:

  • Summer day camps: children ages three and one-half to thirteen join us to partake in nature and artistic activities on the farm
  • A farm-based environmental program: student groups from local and regional public and independent schools join us for a day of learning in the fields of Sunfield Farm
  • A three- to nine-month farm internship program

To learn more about our farm internship program, visit Farm Internship Program. To learn more about our other programs, visit Community Education.

Sunfield is a dynamic, living classroom: an ideal location for offering programs in sustainable land stewardship that engage the hands, awaken the mind, and nurture connections between the earth and its inhabitants.

Land Conservation

In 2005, Sunfield purchased the eighty-one acre property which had been placed under a conservation easement by Jefferson Land Trust. With the exception of five acres for educational facilities, the land is preserved as a working farm in perpetuity.

Our conservation easement, secured in partnership with Jefferson Land Trust, protects twenty-six acres of forest, eight acres of wetlands, and forty-two acres of agricultural land in perpetuity.

Sustainable Agriculture

Sunfield’s biodynamic farming principles are a model of sustainable agriculture. We raise a diversity of animals and organically grown crops, renew the soil with materials produced on the farm, and use cover crops and crop rotation to maintain and improve the fields.

Our farm provides sustainably grown organic food to the local community through produce sales to the Port Townsend Food Co-op and through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program for individual community members. Our CSA program allows community members to purchase a “share” of the year’s production and receive fresh produce from May through mid November.

For more information, and to sign up for a CSA membership, visit Our Farm

Small-scale sustainable agriculture is a crucial component of a healthy community, and our biodynamic farming principles are a model of sustainable agriculture.

Community Service

Sunfield is committed to providing fresh produce to our local food bank and senior services; as we increase our annual harvest, our donations will increase proportionately.

Rural Economic Development

Through private, state, and federal grantors and private donors, Sunfield has brought thousands of dollars into the local economy. Salaries paid to teachers, staff, and farm employees, as well as fees paid to contractors and other service providers, also support the economy of Jefferson County.

Growth in education and farming will naturally increase rural economic growth as we hire more teachers and staff and grow more food for local sales.

Sunfield Farm nourishes the local community and supports the local economy through produce sales to the Port Townsend Food Co-op and other local outlets.
